The Vietnamese Buddhist Temple is the headquarters of the Vietnamese Buddhist Association in Perth. It is well attended throughout the day and in the evenings. Situated in busy Northbridge (an area which is home to many Vietnamese restaurants, shops, and other businesses) the temple provides a refuge from work for many members of the Vietnamese community. It also acts as a focal point for social and cultural activities during holidays and weekends. The temple plays an important role as a centre for Buddhist religious teaching in the city.

We hold a variety of regular classes for all levels of interest:

• General Programme classes are open to everyone and presnet Buddha\\\'s teachings in practical ways that everyone can apply in their daily lives.  These classes are run throughou the Perth Metropolitan area and in Albany and consist of teachings and guided meditations.  In addition to weekly drop-in classes we also offer a range of short courses including Learn to Meditate courses and Introduction to Buddhism courses.  

• Foundation Programme and Teacher Training Programme  -

Foundation Programme is a systematic study programme. In these classes we study in depth the teachings of Buddha and learn how to apply them in our life. The Foundation Programme consists of two study classes each week. In each class there is prayers, meditation, teachings and discussion.

Teacher Training Programme is also a systematic study programme for those who wish to train as qualified teachers iwthin the Kadampa Tradition. It has an additional retreat component.   

• Home Study Programme - Because Western Australia is so vast we endeavor to provide home study options for those who are unable to access teachings due to either distance/remoteness or due to disability and illness.

Help for the Dying and Their Carers

Birth and death, sickness and health, are part of the reality of human existence. In particular, our attitude towards dying and death makes a great deal of difference to the way in which we experience them. Wheel of Life - Hospice Service offers training so that each of us can prepare for our own death.

Helping others wherever one can, according to their needs, is the true expression of compassion. Wheel of Life – Hospice Service aims to offer this gift of affection and love, companionship and emotional and spiritual support to those individuals and their families who are facing life-threatening illness, to the dying, to those who have died and to those who are left grieving.

The Coordinator of the Wheel of Life-Hospice Service is Venerable  Losang Chodron.

Jizoan Zen Centre a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple located in Perth Western Australiain the citys South West near the area of Fremantle. Jizoan Zendo is the first full time Rinzai centre in Australia . The centre was established in 1998. Most attendees are Australian with some Japanese also attending, anyone is welcome.

Since 2004 the Centre sponsored a Zazenkai for office workers in the Central Business District in conjunction with the Hyogo Prefectural Centre who provided the location. As of early 2008 this meditation group has been suspended until a new city location is found.
A residential Zen training program is hoped by 2010.

Based in the teachings of Hakuin, Zen practice at Jizoan follows Rinzai tradition of zazen meditation, open daily to public participation.

Daily Zazen periods at Jizoan last 90 minutes followed by tea ceremony known as sarei and a light talk on practice. As with most Zen temples there is no need to enroll in a class.

Sunday;

  • Full day of Zazen meditation and a chance experience rounded healthy life at Zen. temple.
  • During other times of the month other Cultural activities related to Zen such as Flower arranging Ikebana, and Traditional Japanese Martial arts Koryu bujutsu are also held using traditional style rooms at the Centre.

All financial contributions are used to cover the costs of rent, compulsory rental insurance, electricity, website and other miscellaneous expenses.

Additional funds exceeding our expenses are used to help spread the mindfulness meditation message to others - there is no personal profiting or financial gain from any transactions!

We are a respite/retreat/activity centre governed by Origins Centre in Western Australia, a charitable not-for-profit NGO founded in 1983.

About Us

"The Perth Insight Meditation Group is a group of Dhamma practitioners who invite meditation teachers from around the world to conduct retreats in Perth."

The Perth Insight Meditation Group is a not-for-profit organization with a small group of people who support meditation retreats in Perth. As the group has strengthened over a 13 year period, several retreats are organized annually, led by a range of visiting lay and ordained teachers.

Perth Sri Lanka Buddhist Vihara was established as an incorporated Body in 1998. It is situated at 78, Austin Avenue, Kenwick, about 17 km south of Perth. It is easily accessed via Albany Highway by car and the closest train station is Kenwick station.

The Temple serves the needs of the Sri Lankan Buddhist Community and is also open to anyone interested in the study of Lord Buddha's Teachings and Meditation, including Meditation techniques.

The Temple conducts a Dhamma School for children between the ages of 4 and 15 on Sundays. The premises are also used on Sunday afternoons by Perth Sinhala School to conduct the Sinhala Language classes.

A number of programs are run at our temple; and currently the premises have developed into a cultural centre for the Sri Lankan Sinhalese community of WA. The Venerable Resident Monks also make themselves available for counselling, Bodhi puja, and Bana and Dana at residences on invitation. They also visit the sick and provide blessings Blessing (seth pirith) at special occasions.

Mindfulness Meditation

We offer non sectarian day long retreats. Also we offer Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), an 8 week meditation course which introduces people to the basics of mindfulness practice and includes daily homework and a one day retreat. Three decades of research have highlighted the positive effects of the MBSR program from improving genral health and chronic illness.

Teachers Jean Byrne and Rob Schutze are long term meditation practitioners. Their study of Buddhsim began with Theravadan practcie and later they began to sit Zazen (Kwan Um School and Diamond Sangha). Jean has a PhD in Eastern philosophy and has lectured in Buddhism at the University of Queensland and Bond University.
