As a general introduction to our meditation practice, the purpose is to develop focused clarity in our everyday lives by training the muscle of awareness and presentness in formal meditation sessions. Our style of practice is with eyes open, accepting of and sensitivity to our five senses, using the breath to focus us back intot the present moment, and a gentle relationship with thinking and an accepting relationship to thoughts. While this might seem to be a focus on personal development, our ultimate objective is to be better able to help and heal the societies we find ourselves in: home, friends, work and volunteering.

Meditation every second Sunday open to the public at the auditorium of Brentwood Co-op. From 9:30 to 1:30 (come and leave at any time). If this is your first time joining us for meditation, please use the contact information below for a brief orientation. The general schedule for these sessions is

9:15 to 9:30, set up

Who We Are

California Tendai Monastery is a branch of the Tendai Buddhist Institute.  We serve the diverse community of Lake County in Northern California.

Our Mission

We offer opportunities for laypeople to integrate the Tendai Buddhist tenets of wisdom, compassion, and skillful conduct into householder life through group practice and activities.

What We Do

We promote peace, well-being, and spiritual awakening by promoting the cultivation of the innate Buddha-qualities in all who join in.  To do this, we hold regularly-scheduled meditation and chanting services, and occasional retreats and social gatherings to encourage sangha collaboration and cohesion.

We welcome all members of the local community with an open-door policy and a spirit of inclusion.  We recognize and affirm the capacity for awakening that is latent in all without exception and without discrimination.

We provide pastoral services to a growing Buddhist and interfaith fellowship with a non-consumerist, family oriented emphasis.

We operate democratically and in a socially- and environmentally-responsible manner to the best of our ability.

Cambridge Amaravati Group grew from a few local Buddhists, who were interested in the teachings from Amaravati Buddhist monastery near Hemel Hempstead.
They meet fortnightly on Sunday evenings in the members homes to meditate together for about one hour, with a brief Buddhist ceremony beforehand and tea and a chat afterwards. The type of meditation practiced is vipassana or insight meditation. The group functions as a way for meditators to come together, rather than as a taught class, and is open and sociable. Over the years people have joined who are interested in different forms of vipassana meditation, or in different Buddhist traditions altogether. The group also acts as a contact point for people interested in visiting Amaravati, to find out more directly about this sort of meditation and Buddhist way of life.
