Notes and Events:

The Chicago Ratna Shri Sangha is a non-profit organization dedicated to the practice of Tibetan Buddhism as passed down in the Drikung Kagyu Lineage founded by Lord Jigten Sumgon in the 12th Century. Born in Tibet Lord Jigten Sumgon (Rinchen Phel or Ratna Shri in Sanskrit) was an emanation of Buddha Shakyamuni and was considered to be one of the greatest disciples of Phagmo Drupa, who named him as his successor.

Founded in 1994 by the Venerable Khenchen Konchog Gyaltshen Rinpoche, Chicago Ratna Shri Sangha has sustained itself with regular practice in the homes of local practitioners and teachings given by the precious lamas of the Drikung Kagyu lineage, who have been invited several times yearly.

Under the guidance of our spiritual director, Drupon Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, we are striving to establish a strong center dedicated to serving the Chicago area as a place for teachings, practice, contemplation, and meditation. Under the guidance of Drupon Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche, our goal is to sponsor regular retreats, teachings, and to maintain our regular weekly practice. In the future we hope to establish a broader spectrum of activities to benefit both the local community and other communities worldwide.

We are a diverse group of Chicagoans committed to practicing the Zen way of awakening together, and to providing a place for others to come to and deepen their own practice.  See our website at www.zenchicago.org for additional information.

We meet twice per week: Sunday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the Lincoln Park neighborhood and Wednesday afternoons at 2:15 p.m. in the Chicago Loop.

On Sunday evenings, we meet for zazen, chanting and a dharma talk.  We meet at the Cenacle Retreat Center, 513 W. Fullerton, in Chicago\\\'s Lincoln Park neighborhood.  Meditation begins promptly at 7:00 p.m.  Meditation instruction is available for newcomers every week at 6:40 p.m.

On Wednesday afternoons, we meet for zazen, kinhin, and a dharma talk.  We meet at 30 N. Michigan Ave., Room 1111 (across the street from Millennium Park).  Meditation begins promptly at 2:15 p.m., so please plan to arrive early.  If you are new to Buddhist meditation, please plan to attend a meditation instruction session before your first visit.  Our teacher, Myoshi Thomson, offers meditation instruction to newcomers every Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Suite 1008 of the same building.  If you are planning on attending meditation instruction, please email us at info@zenchicago.org so we know to expect you.

We practice in the Sōtō Zen Buddhist tradition, which traces its heritage back to Buddha through a 2500-year history of fellow practitioners, including our ancient teachers Bodhidharma, Caoqi Huineng, Dongshan Liangjie, and Eihei Dōgen, and our modern teachers, Dainin Katagiri, Shoken Winecoff, and Myoshi Thomson, who guides our practice here in Chicago.

We welcome all to join us in our practice of the way of Zen. What is this practice? The founder of our lineage in Japan, Eihei Dōgen (1200-1253), put it simply: “To study the Way is to study the self; to study the self is to forget the self; to forget the self is to be awakened by all things.” Our practice, then, starts with ourselves, with seeing clearly who we are, and how we are, right now, in this moment.

Our basic activity together is quiet seated meditation. Indeed, the word “Zen” itself is derived from a Sanskrit word for meditation, and sitting in silent meditation has always been the central practice of awakening in Zen. But together we learn to practice the way of awakening in all our activities, and indeed to make our very lives themselves expressions of the awakened mind and heart.

Notes and Events:

Buddhist Chongji Order, one of the leading lay Buddhist order of South Korea, was established in 1972 as a separate organization. The foundation of Chongji Order is a historical fact in the history of Korean Buddhism which prolonged over 1,500 years. During the long journey of Korean Buddhism only few traditional order systems have been surviving where lay Buddhist’s role is less remarkably and very limited.

When Chongji Order was founded Korean Buddhism was decreasing accumulated legacy. Korean Buddhism was losing its legacy and religious zeal for its outdated order system which became irrelevant during the course of history. However, the whole social order was being modernized, and urbanized with rapid speed that was geared by Western values. In that feudalistic environment Korean monks were bound to survive and carry their inherited values. Their everyday life style and entire monastic culture was entirely different from the lay people of Korean society. Furthermore, Buddhist community had become paralyzed and even not able to understand everyday anguish and sufferings of the common mass. These circumstances provided a space for the Korean lay Buddhist order to set out the organization to proselytize the people. Moreover, the system which was near to collapsed that so called traditional Korean Buddhist orders was against of any activity organized by lay Buddhists. Chongji Order was founded in order to overcome such hindrance and motivate the common mass and find better way to proselytize the people into Buddhism.

With the mottos of “Buddhism in Everyday Life” Chongji Order thrust oneself into Korean society, and served an excellent opportunity for common people. The order built its central building not on the mountains but in the main city of South Korea, and devoted her work to modernize Buddhist rituals reflecting modern culture. The practice and teaching were also able to be led by lay Buddhist leaders. With all these changes, the order made great achievements since its foundation. Presently, the order has become one of the five major Buddhist orders of Korea, having thirty six centers with thousand of followers. Chongji Order have also established a foundation for education and welfare, and running a middle school and welfare centers. Chongji Order is also focusing on the other areas. This order has been co-founder of the Buddhist Broadcasting System and Buddhist Television Network of Korea.

Presently one of the most important activities proposing by the Chongji Order is to devote herself to build friendly relation with overseas Buddhist groups. Since 1997, Chongji Order has been promoting companionship with Chinese and Japanese Buddhist Orders for shake of popularizing the activity of order. The proposed forum to be held in coming October will be a historical momentum in this regard.

Chongji Order is committed to build the World Buddhist Exchange Center at the center of Seoul, where the center will facilitate several facilities such as bedrooms, seminar rooms, conference hall, restaurant, and meditation hall etc. for the Buddhist follower visiting Korea and around countries to get Buddhist experience.

Notes and Events:

Cittamani Hospice Service provides professional palliative care to people who are dying and their families. We offer compassionate care and honour clients’ individual choices.

We aim to provide the highest quality service from the time of diagnosis through to the bereavement period. Our belief is that this service is best provided in a healthy and supportive community where death, dying and bereavement are openly discussed and accepted.

The promotion of healthy dying requires terminally ill adults and children to have a choice in where and how they spend their remaining life. To support this choice a range of inpatient and community services are required to ensure continuity of care. The availability of knowledgeable networks of community members is vital to the success of this process.

To Cittamani Hospice Service, a hospice is a holistic approach to care rather than a place.

Our service includes:

  • holistic client-centred care
  • hospice-at-home program
  • multidisciplinary teamwork
  • community participation
  • hospital/general practitioner/community services collaboration
  • bereavement support program
  • community and professional education in issues of death and dying

Cittamani Hospice Service exists within a comprehensive and integrated health network and acts as a model for community-based hospice services both within Australia and overseas.

Notes and Events:

The groups that make up the Coast and City Sangha ( Goolwa Dharma Group  and Ashtree Sangha  follow a broad, secular approach.

This approach values what it is that people actually experience, both in meditation and in daily life.  Within the framework of the teachings of the Buddha, this approach gives us a way to explore, and come to understand more about, these experiences and our inner worlds.

We encourage you to approach meditation with gentleness and curiosity, allowing your own unique experience to unfold naturally;  being open to, and cultivating awareness of, the rich variety of experiences that make up our inner lives, and coming to appreciate in a new way even those aspects we may usually view as unacceptable or mundane

Ashtree Sangha meets on the second Sunday of every month from February to December, upstairs at the Hatha Yoga Shala, 172 Hutt Street, Adelaide. Sangha meetings run from 3 to 5pm.

The Goolwa Dharma Group is based at the Middleton Pioneer Hall, Walker Place, Middleton or see map below. We meet fortnightly on a Monday 10.00 to 12.00 noon.
